Making Healthy Lifestyle Choices
Making a change for the better doesn't have to mean changing everything, and it doesn't have to be complicated. Here are some simple tips for healthier living that can help lower your blood pressure. Individual results may vary.
Choose a healthy variety of foods
Maintaining a healthy diet can help you reach your blood pressure goal:
- Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables
- Switch to low-fat dairy products, such as fat-free (skim) milk
- Choose foods that are high in potassium, such as bananas
- Follow a diet that is low in cholesterol and saturated fats
Making two or more lifestyle changes can lead to even greater blood pressure reductions.
Decrease the amount of sodium in your diet
The sodium content of most foods is listed on the nutrition label. Limit your sodium intake to less than 2400 mg per day. Try substituting natural foods for processed ones and cutting back on fast food. Don't add table salt to your food. If you use antacids frequently, check the sodium content — some brands are high in sodium.
Manage your stress
Stress indirectly leads to high blood pressure. Here are some tips to help cut down on stress:
- Breathe deeply
- Lighten your schedule
- Exercise
- Get plenty of rest
Increase your physical activity
Aerobic exercise lowers blood pressure:
- Exercise at least 30 minutes a day, most days of the week
- Focus on activities that don't tire you out too quickly
- Talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program
Maintain a healthy weight
Weight loss has been shown to have a significant impact on lowering blood pressure. In fact, in some patients a loss of just 10 pounds has been shown to reduce high blood pressure. Talk to your doctor about what a healthy weight range is for you and about setting goals to attain it.
Limit your alcohol intake
While a small amount of red wine has been found to be beneficial to cardiovascular health, limiting alcohol intake has been shown to decrease blood pressure.
Stop smoking
Smoking harms blood vessel walls and causes arteries to narrow and harden faster, which leads to high blood pressure. Quitting smoking has been shown to lower blood pressure almost immediately.
